International Year of Astronomy |
| | 400 years ago, for the first time, a man looked up the sky with a telescope. Galileo is considered today as the founder of modern astronomy. In 1609, when he discovered the Moons of Jupiter, his observations led to a major revolution : he then proved the Earth was not the center of the Universe.
The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) is a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, stimulating worldwide interest not only in astronomy, but in science in general, with a particular slant towards young people.
The ASTROLab hopes to conribute to this big happening by stimulating the interest for the comprehension of our world and of the Universe around us.
400 Years of Astronomy : the ASTROLab proposes...
New exhibition at the ASTROLab The ASTROLab is preparing this winter its new exhibition From a starry sky to the Infinit Universe : how big is the Universe ? Where are we among it's vast content ? Relive the history of the evolution from the conception of Space from our Ancestors time up to this inconceivable immensity which was discovered up until now.
You can visit our new exhibition in our daily guided tour of the ASTROLab.
Astronomy Super Festival To truly underline the International Year of Astronomy, Mont-Megantic Observatory will open its doors to visitors for 12 Saturdays. Be sure to take advantage of this great privilege to glance through the most powerful telescope of the Eastern part of North America.
This Astronomy Super Festival will take place every Saturday this coming summer starting from June 20th to September 5th. The evening will start with a conference at the ASTROLab, then both Observatories will be accessible : Mont-Mégantic Observatory where it will be possible to observe and exchange different views and knowledge with an Astronomer, and the Popular Observatory where our guides will gladly share with you their passion for astronomy.
Saturdays at Mont-Mégantic, a meeting with the Universe !
Galileo Moment To celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, the organization hopes that every one can have a Galileo Moment : a significant astronomy experience. Every visitor at the ASTROLab will have the privilege to live a Galileo Moment, whether by stargazing through a telescope, visit our new exhibition, or visit the Observatory.
Every Science Center will distribute Astro-Cards to every body who will live a Galileo Moment. You will find a code on these cards with which you can register on th IYA website. The Canadian Space Agency will send into space, in 2010, the names of all the persons who will have registered !
