As the winter constellations set ever earlier, April marks the return of Arcturus, the second brightest star of the northern sky. Located in the Bootes constellation, this reddish star is easily found by extending the arc formed by the tail of Ursa Major. As for planets, Saturn is at opposition around the middle of this month and therefore it reaches it's maximum brightness for the year. Located in the Virgo constellation, it is visible to the southeast after sunset and is due south around midnight. It will reward those who look at it through a telescope by the remarkable spectacle of its rings. Finally, Mars rises in the East just after sunset and is visible all night in the constellation Leo. Great skies!
